The result of 78 years of collecting, my Grandmother’s basement was packed from floor to ceiling with memories. Tucked away between books, dusty papers and thick plastic bags, I found a folded stack of tissue paper, upon which water had leaked and left an intricate stain. This event inspired a drastic change in my creative process. I explore notions of imagination, beauty and value, through forms shaped by water on sheets of tissue. Shifting between simplicity and complexity, crafts and fine arts, this work crosses the border and bridges both worlds. The physical interaction between the viewer and the tissue paper is an essential aspect of the work, which intentionally requires touch, exploration and discovery. As the paper comes to life through fluctuating air current, its fragility is exposed and remains unprotected, the vibrant colors are also subjected to elements which cause fading to occur. As wars, genocide, famine and other disasters exist around the world, I struggle with what fuels our desire to save or protect?
